It is a combination of getting older/media/money/social media...etc.

I have noticed my interest in sports aren't what it used to be. I believe a lot of that are responsibilities and priorities. Kids and work take away from your time to watch, talk, and take any all you can from sports. When you are younger, you aren't too worried about salaries, but then you see professionals complain about their salaries, and most people aren't making the money pro athletes are making so that rubs people the wrong way.

Media's focus has also shifted - instead of being buddy-buddy with the players, the media digs up dirt on any and everyone in sports to find the worse in these players instead of hiding these transactions. Social media can lump into this as well - before, not a lot of athletes said anything political or much opinions about anything (at least during their playing days). Nowadays, even when you don't ask for it, athletes (just like everyone else) are voicing their opinions about any and everything. This can turn off a lot of fans depending on how they view their opinions.

Of course, your post's focus is more about college, but you are starting to see the same issues from pro sports into college sports. Some of it could just be a decline of VT football over the past 15 years. It is easy to root for a team winning 10 games - it gets harder to see the same team struggle, and usually the problems are the same over the years. Thus, as you grow older, you have watched more games - you have seen more "unbelievable plays." You have seen your team have/commit the same problems over and over. It may be a new game, but your brain may treat it as a re-run. It may also be timing - when did a certain fan start being a fan of VT? Was it the late 90s/2000s where that person enjoyed winning, but has seen the decline. Or, did the person be a fan even when there was struggling - 80s, or even earlier. This person may continue on because they have seen the highs and lows...or that person can see some lows and not want to have to go through that. It is a total ebb and flow.
