Villanova explored the possibility of switching in the early 2010s,

but decided that the DI-FCS was the better subdivision for a couple reasons.

Issue #1: FBS requires the minimum stadium capacity to be 15K paid attendance. While Villanova's stadium only has a capacity of 12K and I don't think expanding the stadium is an option. Where would Villanova play if it wanted to switch subdivisions.

Issue #2: To switch subdivisions would mean increasing the football scholarships by 22 from 63 to 85. Also, Villanova would either have to increase the women's scholarships by 22 or reduce the men's scholarships by 22 in other sports in order to be compliant with Title IX. Can Villanova afford the increased cost of potentially 44 scholarships plus potentially COA cost?

I found this article from 2012 which seems to indicate that Villanova has been wrestling with this debate since the late 1970s. I guess the question that Villanova has to ask itself is what (if anything) has changed since 2012 that would address the football feasibility study which stated the follow, "Realistically, the issue is not whether football might generate profits but whether or not it is worth the expense."
