We had one guy do the opposite


His big thing was shingle colors on garages. We have some houses with unattached garages, and the shingles are supposed to be the same color. Never mind that after 20 years of aging, new shingles will not look like old shingles.

Anyway, he was on the board to approve changes, so he knew who had approval to do stuff in the neighborhood. (Even though, I would argue, the bylaws clearly state that if you're replacing with like color, you don't need approval.) Anyway, he saw a company out about to start work on replacing a garage's roof, and he ran out and insisted that they stop -- that he was on the HOA and said homeowner didn't have permission, and now that the company knew they were legally bound to cease and desist. Pure nonsense, but the crew bought it and packed up and left.

He's bragging about this at the next meeting to all of us and expecting accolades, and I just tell him, "Sorry, but if I was that homeowner I'd be pissed off. They planned that, likely took time off of work, and you're not authorized by ANYone on the HOA, even as a member, to stop work. You approve it, and you can speak to any fines later, but if you did that to me we'd have some issues."

That was shortly before I quit the board.
