There are risks with any of these choices. Fuente hasn't worked out the way we all wanted. That was a G5 selection. When Whit was at Cincy, he brought in Tommy Tubberville -- a former P5 head coach -- and that was a disaster.

I'm in favor of a rising star G5 HC or a hotshot P5 coordinator. I do NOT want some retread P5 HC. The reason those guys with previous P5 HCing experience are on the market is because they got canned at their last job. If they were great coaches, they'd still have their jobs.

We're not going to be pilfering a stud P5 HC away from any really good programs -- so what we would be stuck with is the retreads. Those same tired old coaches who haven't been successful.

Are there many coaches who were fired from one P5 HCing job and then went on to be really successful at some other P5 programs?

Lou Holtz was fired from Notre Dame and had some success at South Carolina, right? I can't think of many others.

The list of G5 guys who went on to be really successful P5 coaches is quite long.
