Maine observations...
VT played great on both ends. I dont think I can pick a single player who played below their standard.
Offensively, VT got in trouble when the movement became stagnant and only 1 or 2 passes were made. When 4 or 5 players touched the ball, the offensive efficiency was through the roof. VT was better than Maine substantially at every spot up and down the bench, so its easy to fall in love with taking your man off the dribble or settling for a quick 3 without passes, but that isnt championship basketball. There wasnt enough of it for it to be a concern in November, but I guarantee it makes the film session as a point of emphasis.
Despite what it looked like last night, VT isnt going to out-skill most of their opponents due to any one player being better than everyone else (i.e. they dont really have a sure-fire NBA guy to take over) however you can see the strength of how much better they make each other by using the skills they do have to make the defense's life a nightmare. Hopefully they dont lose sight of that and understand their power is in the collective unit.
Defensively they played very well. The opponent was outmatched, but VT controlled what they could control. The only area of concern I saw was when the ball got to the high post and the low block would post up, the low block defender would get pushed too far up the lane. Maine had more than a few opportunities to make a play over the top (particularly when the wings posted) but werent talented enough or confident enough to make that play. Other teams will be.
David N'Guessan had an incredible game and a great coming out party. He didnt play any minutes on the perimeter, but he did hit his only 3. A great sign. His FT looked like the old Dave, but you can tell he is more confident and letting his brain go much more than last season.
Shout out to Big John Ojiako. Really wish he had been able to get development minutes last season, he would be so much more advanced. Once he gets a feel for how to operate in space around the basket he is going to be a load. I hope he sticks around for his 5th year, he could be a monster.
