I agree about the issue of ND not playing and moving up. But, look at 2017

Alabama won a national championship, yet didn't even play for the SEC championship. Didn't even win their division.

Again, lost their last game, to Auburn, yet got in. Yes, they won it, but do you deserve to play for it, when you can't win your division? It's almost like putting UVA in the Sweet 16 after they got beat in the first round by UMBC. That's essentially what football does by allowing a team in that has lost the last game they played.
