Well, let’s see…..
Whit forced Fu’s hand when he said Fu wouldn’t be retained. It was a no win situation. Fu accepted a reduced buyout as part of the consideration to leaving early. The contract called for the buyout. A lot of folks thought Whit should have fired him last year…..perhaps he should have.
Bud’s defense collapsed after year two. His defense definitely did not cover Fu’s offensive issues the whole time. You must have amnesia.
Fu tried to replace Corny early on but there was no appropriation of funds by Whit to do so. Wrt Scott, I don’t believe he was here long enough to determine how good or bad he was as a coach at VT. It’s unfortunate that his affair occurred and resulted in his resignation, but it happened. A fair amount of folks believe that Scott’s departure contributed to Fu’s subsequent failure.
Fu clearly was not a “fans” coach; no question there.
Fu didn’t destroy the program, but he sure didn’t help it much either. We had our chances to win as well as lose more games this past year. However, we could potentially have had a 9 win season. Whit and the administration clearly let the matter get out of hand by not timely recognizing and addressing appropriate funding of the program and personnel issues. Fu made do with what he had, but he was not a good CEO of the program, and most likely never would have been. He pocketed the money because that’s what the contract called for. That’s not on him…..that’s on Whit and the administration.
