Here's what I'm hearing from managers . . .

Working from home during COVID was a great short-term solution. Almost everyone loved it. Almost all of the 'essential' work was able to handled. Larger project work was slowed, and they saw productivity rates decreased sharply, 30%, 50% or more. They were paying the same wages to get 60% of the work they expected to be completed. Many workers claimed they were more productive at home. While they may have felt that way, the work they have been performing was not what the teams, leaders, project managers were expecting or needed to move projects forward. This is all anecdotal, but I belong to 3 different business networking groups, and it seems to be how leaders across industries are feeling right now. No everyone, some are killing it and making record revenue and profit. But the ones that struggled and went all virtual office are reassessing why they're struggling, and this is what I'm hearing. Knee jerk reactions may make the pendulum swing too far back.
