Actually, in high school and college, a lot of discretion is out the window

Different rules than professional for sure. However, there are certain rules and certain things said that trigger an automatic ejection in multiple sports.

I do two sports at the NCAA level. Having served in the Army for 10 years, curse words do not offend me but I was taken to task multiple times by my college assigners as well as conferences for allowing a coach/player to continue on in a game after using certain words. And to be honest, they were correct as our jobs as officials involve two priorities (1) Sportsmanship (2) Safety. That behavior, while not offensive to me, does elevate the temperature of the game which affects #1 and sometimes #2 when tempers rise up. I learned to have a much quicker trigger after that and to at least be consistent with those sets of words or arguments.
