Oh I agree that the pursuit of money has killed some great rivalries


However, it is my understanding that the SEC considers certain rivalries to be "sacred" and will make sure they always survive. I believe this list includes the following:

The World Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party
Third Saturday in October
Iron Bowl
The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry

Now I do think the SEC considers instate and a few interstate rivalries (i.e. UK-UT, Battle Between the Hedges, Battle for the Boot, etc) to be important and maybe sacred at some level. I am unsure if the SEC considers them to be as sacred as the 4 mentioned above. After all the only reason the SEC implemented protected cross-division games in 1992 is so it could preserve the Third Saturday in October and The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry as annual conference games.
