You make some good points. Here's how I looked at it

Presumed #1 and undefeated ND goes into its last weekend of the season and loses to Stanford. They finish 11-1.

the following week, UNC upsets Clemson whose only loss to that point was to #1 ND. UNC finishes 12-1 with a 12 game win streak.

10-2 Stanford, fresh off a win over #1 ND goes on to win the PAC and is 11-2.

MSU beats previously unbeaten Iowa (SOS way worse than UNC) to go 12-1.

At this point the committee is probably picking among ND, Stanford, MSU, and UNC for #'s 3 and 4 in the playoff.

UNC and ND are 4-0 against common opponents. ND is 8-1 v. P5's, 3-0 v. G5's. UNC is 10-1 v. P5's and 2-0 v.FCS.

Stanford is 10-2 v. P5's , 1-0 v. G5 and they and ND each have a win over a common opponent (USC). Stanford also owns the head to head.

MSU is 9-1 v. P5's, 3-0 v. G5 and they have no common opponents with ND.

Final SOS was ND (8), Stanford (10), MSU (20) and UNC (30)...don't know what it was before the bowls.

So what distinguishes ND from these 3 CCG winners? Are they clearly better than any of them...unequivocally in the top 4? We know they are 0-1 against the CCG winner with the worst record.

The committee had MSU at 3 and ahead of Stanford...perhaps due to common game against Oregon and the late win over 12-0 Iowa, though Stanford now has a hypothetical win over an undefeated presumed #1.

I don't think there is any way ND is ahead of Stanford losing head to head, Stanford with CCG points, and the SOS pretty close.

In one on one comparisons, ND is probably closer to being ahead of UNC and MSU with the committee looking at SOS versus CCG.

In this hypothetical we gave UNC a 12 game win streak, the longest in the country, and a win equal to ND's best win.

I think Stanford was ND's playoff game.
