Agree, you can only play the hand you have been dealt
And he has done it well . Based on a historical perspective going back 35+ years, there is NO reason to believe that the ACC should have survived or even prospered given the predominance that football today has in intercollegiate athletics. For that alone I give Swofford an overall grade of A- for his tenure.
Four of the original schools in NC and 2 of them small privates was the hand he was dealt. The only real whiff was taking BC but the political dynamics of the league almost demanded it at the time. Losing UMD sucked but that wasnt on the ACC or Swofford- more on the incompetence of the AD at UMD and the hiring of a Big 10 President and AD who had no emotional ties to the ACC. Swofford responded quickly and overcame the normal gripes of the Presidents over academics (in adding Louisville).
He has "herded cats" on very important moves for the ACC in a remarkably efficient way since the BC Miami Syracuse debacle. Evidently he has earned the trust of the folks that matter most in the ACC. Sorry he cant magically walk on water and make the ACC more financially prosperous than the SEC or Big 10 . But given the hand.......
