Since it was free to begin with you're not out anything but time. And 99 percent of the time you'd rent a Ryder truck anyway.

But since I had the vehicle in hand as it were, I'd remove and secure the furniture so I could use the whole capacity.

Leaving the furniture in the van is a nonstarter. Makes you work harder, make more trips, and conduct operations inefficiently.
