BTN was not successful in 2009


It was only distributed by 2 carriers, and it was losing money. It almost went under, but it was saved by a cash infusion by Fox in June, 2010 with 51% ownership stake. Fox basically bought it to save it. It was revamped with a new logo and look for 2011 football season. Fox eventually saved it. It's been performing well since 2013.

The council of presidents took the discussion of a channel off the table in 2009. It was not an option for Swofford to discuss with ESPN or anyone else in 2010. It was revisited in 2011 after the Longhorn Network was announced. The additions in 2011 by the ACC were part of a strategy by the ACC to position for a network with increased geographic footprint and population. But the ACC didn't want to add more than 2 at a time due to the contract language. I wish they didn't let WVU go, but that's what was done.

The Maryland thing was a reaction from the Big Ten when the ACC took Notre Dame from their plans. The ACC didn't expect that, but adjusted quickly because of all the prep work in 2011.
