HVAC Gurus - Could use your help!

Just had a tech come out who took a look at our system (which wasn't cooling right) and saw that our evaporating coils are leaking refrigerant. Gave us two options:

1) Replace the coils (~$2000)
2) Replace the entire AC system (~$4000-4500)

Our system is 9 years old. I have two other groups coming out to perform estimates as well.

I know NOTHING about HVAC work, so if anyone else has experience with this and can offer advice (even if it's just process, not technical advice) that'd be great.

It's 90+ degrees in DC this coming week...so not the best time for our AC to kick it. Going to need to fix it quick before the wife leaves me! TIA!!
