I was in the exact same situation about five years ago


The one difference was I had a neighbor who was an HVAC tech and he helped with diagnosing and fixing the problem. I got the replacement set of coils at his contractor price (about $400) and he and I replaced them.

My cost was a lot less than $2K, but I still went with just replacing what was broke instead of replacing everything.

My general philosophy in life is if it ain't broke, don't fix it. if it is broke, replace only what you have to. The disposable nature of our society now tends to irritate me at times.

Your mileage may vary with that approach to life, though.
