The reality is the wood STARTS at 2x4 and is surfaced down to whatever size


you buy. It's not always an exact 1.5" x 3.5" either. I've purchased lumber that was slightly bigger (nontreated). If you buy pressure treated lumber, it's almost always bigger than 3.5" because of the swelling (giggity).

Woodworkers know that the wood they buy isn't referred to by 2x4 but instead 5/4, 8/4 and is measured in board feet and not linear feet unless surfaced.

Lawyers are the absolute worst.
