A potential advantage to announcing early is if you are able


to land a "big fish," then it prevents another conference from landing that "big fish" close to when you are looking to expand and renewing your GoR. Instead of you scrambling around to figure out Plan B, C, D....,or Z, the other conference may be forced to alter their plans even if they are only tentative plans.

Let's say the SEC is starting to explore the possibility of adding Texas and OU when its GoR comes up for renewal. If the Big Ten announces in 2020 it is adding Texas and/or OU in 2023, then that will force the SEC to either put a pause on any planning or go back to the drawing board.
