I stayed in Salvo for two nights in the summer of 1999 (edited)

Was rumored to be in a home owned by Nora Roberts.

Rodanthe is halfway approx between Kill Devil Hills and Hatteras Island. Going to the Hatteras lighthouse and seeing how far and how they moved it inland is interesting. Summer I was there the moving was underway and the whole lighthouse was on tracks and ready to move.
