I've installed four ceiling light fixtures, two wall light fixtures

and one ceiling fan/light fixture combo, but just ran into a connection in the kitchen fluorescent ceiling box I have not seen before. Or anywhere else I've even done this simple and highly risky DIY stuff.

Everywhere else I've installed fixture there was a white wire, a black wire and a ground wire. The kitchen ceiling box has those and a nutted, taped red wire connection.

The old ceiling fixture was not wired to the red wires, just simple b/b, w/w and the new fixture has only b. w. and ground.

Do I ignore the red wires because they weren't wired into the previous fixture?
