It is likely there because a fan with a light was there and the wall switch (a double) could turn on one or the other. Or it is part of a 3 way switch and you shouldn't ignore it. Is there a switch in the room that doesn't work? If so, you ought to fix it.
You can look up 3 way wiring on Youtube. It can be done more than one way, and you need to figure out which way it was set up originally.
