Until we know what it actually was it's hard to say.
I agree with bump stocks, but the ATF (under Obama) ruled them legal. "Silencers" aren't as quiet as people think (ignore movies and TV). There are health benefits with regards to protecting hearing for recreational shooters. Bringing them up here is false equivalency though...it wouldn't really have made this situation worse, shots would've still been heard.
As far as mental checks, they should be involved and thorough...but blame privacy rights activists for that one.
If this guy actually had legally owned automatic weapons he went through very rigorous background checks and registration of these firearms. If he obtained them illegally or illegally altered themno checks or system would stop that.
You're right about one thing...nothing is going to change...because for the most part just like everything else they two sides aren't actually interested in working together.
