So I finally saw the original Blade Runner this week

Not sure how or why I never saw it back in the 80's, but I never did. But with the new one coming out, the original showed up on TV, so I recorded it and watched it this week.

I know you are supposed to judge historical items based on their merits at the time (and not by today's standards), but I just didn't "get" that movie. I tried to put my brain back in a 1982 mindset, but that didn't seem to help any.

Can someone who loved the movie when it came out attempt to describe why it was awesome?

Was it because Rutger Hauer was in it? I remember Rutger Hauer being awesome in the 80's.
