and when you do that, but only win 2 of the past 11 (or 12) matches you've played in the WC it'll give you a sense of entitlement that you belong in the WC each time simply by showing up.

That's what I think happened with this team. They simply showed up, expecting points for their matches because so many have told them how 'good' they are for making the round of 16 several times. This qualifying they ended up 3-4-3 and as Landon said "Got what they deserved".
