Battleships were old hat by the time of WW1


But the navies liked them because they looked impressive and intimidating, and carried a crapload of firepower. The reality was that it had already been shown how easy it was to bring them down, even before the U-boat. Nonetheless, the great powers were still in love with them, and viewed them as a symbol of strength. In fact, the Kaiser's obsession with matching Britain's battleship fleet may ultimately have been what turned Britain against Germany.
