Rolled up on an accident on a Fri night in 1984 when I was a Jr in HS...
a friend's truck was wrapped around a phone pole, a guy had back out of a blind driveway and he had swerved to miss him and went head on into the pole. Don't care how good a driver you are, he wasn't speeding, he was going to hit the car or the pole and he couldn't see the pole, there was no other options.
He and another friend were standing next to the truck when I drove up. Both looking stunned but alive and just a few scratches. Truck was totaled (a 1980 or so Chevy S10).
Seat belt use was not mandatory then and neither wore seat belts normally, but when they left Georgetown Randy put one on (and luckily was not drinking that night despite being legal to do so in DC at 18 back then), said he had no idea why be put it on, just did, and Jim saw him do it and put his on as well. Both are alive today because of those seat belts.
Next night I was at a party and Jim was sitting there, still somewhat stunned. I sat down and he looked at me and said..."by all rights, I should not be here right now, I should be dead. I never wear a seat belt, but for some reason I put it on last night"
I have not driven or ridden in a car since that day without wearing one.
