At one point, Paterno wanted to form an east coast conference

for both division I basketball and football. It would have included: PSU, Pitt, Temple, WVU, Rutgers, Syracuse, BC, and Maryland. It fell apart for a couple of reasons. For one, they were just a little two late in getting the idea out there. Dave Gavitt had already come up with his Big East proposal, and the schools would have had to choose one plan or another. And more importantly, PSU refused to guarantee equal revenue sharing, or even equal home & away matchups in football. Syracuse and BC balked at that. And I don’t know how serious Maryland would have been.

It’s interesting to think what might have been had that come to fruition. Maybe VT takes Maryland’s place in the ACC, and later on the ACC adds FSU and JoePa’s east coast conference adds Miami. That would have made for two formidable football conferences.
