I do it every year through Salvation Army Angel Tree

You're talking about getting details about a kid, and then buying things on their list or that fit their size? That's what we do. I try to pick kids who are the same genders/ages as ours, and then our kids get involved in finding the presents.

The kids available to be adopted are already screened, and we get a list with their first name(s), gender, age, some clothing/shoe sizes and they name 2-3 toys they would like to have. We buy those toys and add more, though I'm not entirely sure that the "extras" we buy aren't split off during the distribution process and given to other kids who weren't adopted.

Most kids want simple things, and it kills me to see some of these lists and how simple the requests are. A very few kids want something like an XBox, which I don't begrudge I suppose. Still, those kids are often the handful who are not adopted.

And I emphasize to my family how fortunate we are, and that it means we have a responsibility to help others who aren't.
