For gifts for the kids? I have done this a number of times. It's one of my


favorite ways to give. I have not "adopted" meaning to invite over for a holiday meal or anything.

It's heartbreaking to see a kid's list that included socks and underwear. I always get whatever is on the list plus some games or toys appropriate for the age. I have also bought Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner for families. I really love the idea that my gift goes to a particular, real person and not just into the coffers of the Salvation Army or Red Cross.
