The College Football Playoff is actually somewhat similar to how the NCAA Division I wrestling selections are made. There's a committee, coaches vote and we have a "coaches poll" for the individual rankings, although they aren't called a "poll."

There's nothing "entertainment" about those rankings, which include most every coach in the country. Two coaches per conference per weight and there is little overlap. Those rankings/poll are one third of the qualification process. The other two are win percentage and RPI.

If you're alleging a football poll isn't about entertainment and a wrestling poll is, then you'd be partially wrong, mostly in fact, since more than half of the season, the AP and Coaches Polls are essentially meaningless in the world of the CFP. Once the CFP poll/ranking is out, all the major outlets use that vs. an AP or Coaches Poll.

Having coordinated this poll for nearly a decade and during my time at InterMat and AWN, the individual rankings weren't entertaining. They were likely the most painful thing to populate and put together, but it was also why any college rankings with my name on them were regarded as the most respected and best researched. This is my wheelhouse.
