BMW did that too, and have no idea if it's still their practice


They wanted to "reduce" the maintenance (cost) schedule for their ATs, so they went to a automatic transmission fluid that would last "the life of the transmission." (At the very least, it will last the life of the warranty.) This is actually a true statement, because it will last the life of the transmission, but not the life of the car. If you keep it long enough, you will need to replace it. (Those who like to buy and keep automobiles a long time, this is a red-flag against buying one of these automobiles.)

Hopefully they've changed this practice to make their automatic transmissions serviceable again...
