Today is perhaps the hardest day of the year for me

Five years ago a dear friend's daughter was the sole survivor in her class of 15 in the Sandy Hook shooting. She lived by playing dead - how a six-year-old has the presence of mind to do that is beyond me. After emerging from the school covered in blood from head to toe she told her mom "I'm okay, but all my friends are dead." How do you ever get that out of your head, as a parent or anyone else?

My friend is a Tech grad, and in fact we met at Tech the summer before our senior year in high school. She says her daughter continues to see a therapist but by all accounts is doing fairly well. As she told me last year, "it's just part of who we are now."
