were attempting to show that Luke has evolved beyond being a jedi knight into being a jedi master. i.e. A jedi knight runs in to fight Ren. A jedi master realizes he would be killed quickly and does the thing that will distract the first order for the longest time possible while the rag tag rebellion escapes.

I honestly think that's where they were going. That and Luke's X-wing had been under water for years.
