The code breaker side plot had a larger purpose, I think


Despite the fact it was cloying and unnecessary, they accomplished one new thing - showing us a class of people we never knew existed. Think about it - as far as we know there are only two classes of people in the galaxy, bad guys and rebels. The idea that a military corporation builds both Tie Fighters and X-Wings is very new.

So it appears they are setting up something for the future with that stable boy - anyone can use the Force, not just the chosen elite.
