This is great advice. I worked for an investment company briefly and the

first thing they teach you is there has never been a 10 year period where bonds beat equities, except for the great depression. My broker also said that the period right after 9/11 might be debatable as well. Regardless, it only happens in exceptional circumstances.

He and I have debated my portfolio's composition quite a bit. I really think brokers tend to push a high % of their clients' portfolio into bonds because most people absolutely freak if their totals go backwards. Bonds do limit your downside (unless interest rates spike), but they also limit your upside.

I handle my 401k directly and have 95% in equities funds. It did nearly 6x better than what my broker did for the monies he managed this year.

Since I have a ~10 year window before I retire, I'll have to get the broker to make changes or I'll have to change the broker.
