Was it Swaggart who cried during his 'confession'? Actually, I can find


SOME reason for it. That aspect of Christianity is BIG on redemption. It's ok if/when you sinned in the past, so long as you've accepted Christ NOW.

And, of course, many of those pastors approach cult like status.
