Had the same situation @ Fortune 100 company


Guy lost his wife in car accident -- he was late 40s, with two kids going to college.

He was a nice guy, but a bit clueless. If you had a project with 6-7 people, pretty good chance he'd be the bottleneck.

Our company wasn't doing well, so every year it was 10-20% reduction (with his department typically closer to 20-25%). Somehow, he survived every round. Decent chance he was personally protected by Director (they'd been in same office for 7+ years, so there was a personal/friend relationship).
