I missed this one yesterday. 38 years ago to the day I was covering a high school basketball game. The USA-Russia hockey game was played in the afternoon, but because there weren't 800 cable channels and ABC wanted better ratings, no one talked about it, it was taped delayed and shown on television that night. There started to be whispers that the USA had beaten Russia (there was no internet so you would only know by newspapers or television), which was somewhat akin to "and everybody at tonight's basketball game will receive a pet unicorn."

I went back to the Roanoke Times to file my story (Feb. 22 fell on a Friday in 1980), watching the ending on television with the rest of the sports department on a 19-inch black and white (there were no DVRs back then) and hearing All Michaels say "You've got 10 seconds...the countdown going on right now...Morrow up to Silk...Five seconds left in the game...Do you believe in Miracles? YES!"

At that point the trophy for greatest sports call was retired. There will never be anything anywhere near as good as those last 10 seconds.
