If you want to try Linux - Ubuntu is a good way to go. Lot of users, lot of support - pretty solid flavor of linux.

If you really want to kick the tires though - try Virtual box. You can run a Virtual Box software (free) on Windows and then install a virtual instance of Linux. See below.
