You're also ignoring the increasing diesel sedan and suv market.

Small diesel engines get waaaaaaay better mileage than gas ones. Those small diesels can outdo a prius. They're everywhere in Europe. They're starting to do it more here. the advent of the 1500 level pickups putting them in is great. The F-250 and 2500 diesel engines are really made for towing like you said. But the smaller ones can be great daily drivers and they last forever.
