Think of each block as 100. Then...starting from zero...


the addresses in the first block run 0-99, the next block 100-199, and so on.

That way you know if you're at 400 and you want to go to 1600, you're 12 blocks away. In most cities, a block is 350 feet, or 1/16th of a mile. If you're 12 blocks away, you're 3/4 mile.

Look at a map of Richmond. Foushee is the zero block running north and south. First block to the east is "(0-99) East Main Street. To the west, it's "(0-99) West Main Street.

Oh, the 350' long blocks is what determined that most fire apparatus and fire codes require a 350 foot hose lay between hydrants. At intersections, they're typically on the corner.
