Baseball Overtime

So I was listening to the Salem Red Sox (high A) game last night, and the Sox came back to tie the game 3-3. The game was still tied after the ninth, so it went to extra innings. That's when the new overtime rule kicked in. It was the first time I've experienced it.

Beginning in the top of the tenth in the Carolina League (not sure about the rest on the minors), a runner is automatically placed on second base to start the inning. The game then proceeds from there. If the visitor's score, the home team would have the same opportunity in the bottom half.

Immediately, the normal flow of the game was thrown off. Immediately the pitcher walked the first batter to get the threat of a force. This back-fired on the Winston-Salem Dash last night as the Red Sox dinged them for two runs right off the bat. Later, they added a third run off a sac fly after the Dash loaded the bases.

I know they are just test driving this rule change but as the angry Colonel said on that MASH episode where Hawkeye and Radar go to pickup Hunnicutt at the airport, "Well, I don't like it. I don't like it at all!..No, Sir! I don't like it at all!"

Yes. FWIW 2 perfect games went into extra innings too. -- VTHokie2000 04/23/2018 5:10PM
