Yeah, not sure about the 95% part, but a lot of it completely wasteful

whose only purpose is to make people feel better.

Recycling metals generally makes sense. The lifecycle cost to the environment of making something out of recycled aluminum or copper vs. virgin aluminum or copper is actually lower.

But yeah, recycling plastics and paper is mostly a feel-good smoke and mirrors show that is in the best of cases environmentally neutral.

If you want to save the planet...using less will get you a lot further than recycling will.
