There are christian groups (and maybe others) who run their own plans. As I understand it, you pay a monthly premium. When you have a bill, you send it in and they pay a large portion of it, based on agreements with the docs/hospitals, etc.

My boss used it for years after I told him about them.

No idea if it even works for single coverage, but you might want to look into them. Many folks aren't aware of them.
