a certain personality/signature, unfortunately in the case of the U. S. Open it is all about the USGA setup whereas the R&A prefers it to be about the course. There are plenty of classic layouts in the US, including Shinnecock, that could host the championship with minimal variations to the existing layout. The idea of double cutting, rolling the greens, modifying the length of the rough, etc. all usually significantly impact the way the course plays compared to the original design intentions. I understand the need for certain modifications to older venues to allow for changes in technology(Augusta is probably the prime example here) and the way the game is played today but, in my opinion, that is different than tricking up a course to play differently for four days. Between Shinnecock, Oakmont, Pebble Beach, Winged Foot, etc., etc. the USGA ought to be able to select venues on a rotational basis that test the entire range of a golfer's skills without having to trick the setup at individual layouts.
