Media rights to BTN in GoR


I seem to recall that the B1G schools assigned their media rights to the BTN rather than the conference when they formed their GoR. The BTN then made the deals with FSN and ESPN. Any ideas about why? Is this a way to obscure the revenue numbers for the BTN, or does it serve to isolate the partial memberships of Notre Dame hockey and Johns Hopkins lacrosse? This would not be a random device, it surely has a purpose. But what?
