Nats have 57 games left


They are 5.5 back in the NL East, with PHI and ATL in front of them.

They are 5.5 back in the WildCard, with ARI, ATL, COL, PIT, STL, and SF in front of them.

That doesn't feel like a LOT, but yes. Yes it is. The division is more attainable because with games remaining against ATL and PHI the Nats can make up twice the ground. The wildcard requires a whole lot of other teams to all fall on their faces at once.

They are not playing well. They have not played well all year. Their starting pitching (outside of Max Scherzer) is bad. Other than blind faith or stupid luck, there is no particular reason to think that the next 57 games will go better that the 105 that have come already.

Even if you wanted to make projections based on the optimistic pre-season forecasts for the Nats, and relatively pessimistic ones for ATL and PHI, the Nats come out behind. Oh ... and too many Nats players are hurt or not playing well.
