Actually two-thirds through the season

They are actually just about 2/3 through the season, so there is not much time. But yes, if a team was playing well, that gap could be made up. But they are not playing well at all, losing to bad teams (Miami) at a time when everyone knows that they need to turn it around. It doesn't look good for them at all.

But also, there is a very big question about keeping Bryce Harper, who with Boros as his agent, is going to want an enormous contract. I can name half a dozen young guys in MLB who deserve more money than Harper, but he will be demanding top dollar. Some team will pay him, the type of sorry team that needs to prove to their fans that they will pay (even silly money) to rebuild a team. Either that or the Yankees/Dodgers, who had gobs of money.

But if the Nats are not going to resign him for $300-million-plus, and they are not making the playoffs this year, do what smart teams do by trading him for prospects now.
