The growth goes untaxed as long as the money when withdrawn goes towards education expenses. You can't deduct it from Federal, but you can in some states.

The lesser known part of that is you can open it in your name before this possible child is born then transfer to them later on. Nieces and Nephews are eligible too if that kid never comes.
