Have you ever observed him handle the weapon irresponsibly?

And note that "irresponsibly" means has he ever taken the gun out of the holster in public without removing the magazine and clearing the chamber? If no one has ever seen him mishandle the weapon outside his home, then there are decent odds he is simply a responsible, albeit paranoid, gun owner with no cause for alarm.

As far as kids going over to his house, I think it is completely reasonable to ban your kid from going over there until you have personally verified how he secures his firearms in the house. If every gun he owns is either in a safe, secured with a trigger lock, on physically on his person at all times, I wouldn't have an issue with my children going over there.

Someone who open carries is certainly unusual and cause for a little due diligence on your part, but it doesn't automatically make them whacko.
